Desk Yoga Is A Waste Of Time

Said no one ever.

As a yoga teacher, you may consider my opinion biased.

You would be correct.

But from a factual standpoint. I would also be correct.

I teach yoga and neuroscience, so everything that I write is not only backed by science but also by each and every member's reaction and feedback (that’s why Balance Brain Body is always evolving because we listen to you).

What Is Desk Yoga?

First of all, let's start with yoga, it’s an all-encompassing practice. Unlike other forms of fitness or movement, yoga connects breath work, mind and body as one. When you do yoga, you don’t just stretch, you learn about yourself, philosophy and how you react to the world around you, both on and off the mat.

So how does this relate to your desk? Well, yoga can be done anywhere, and there’s no better place to weave it in than at your desk.

You can do movement, meditations, breath work and brain drills all from your desk.

Why Should You Try Desk Yoga?

If you’re reading this, I am guessing you work (at minimum) 9 til 5 sat at your desk. Maybe you’re even sat on the sofa hunched over your laptop right now. Wherever you are, we all know we haven’t evolved to sit for so long in one position. And I’m not even bringing up the dreaded topic of ‘posture’…

Perhaps you already experience:

  • Sunday evening dread.

  • Long hours hunched over your desk.

  • Aches, pains, stiffness.

  • No time. No energy.

  • Stressed and exhausted doesn’t even cut it.

But it feels impossible to do more. Working already takes all of your time, so how are you going to add more to your to-do list and remember to do it?

Creating a new habit can feel like a challenge, even once you feel the incredible changes in your health, that’s why it's crucial to make them small, manageable and easy to slot into your routine.

Let’s say you have five minutes before your Teams meeting starts, well, this is the perfect time (to skip that TikTok doomscroll and) do some desk yoga.

Not only will you feel refreshed and energised, but you will feel more focused in your meeting.

The benefits aren’t short-lived.

That mini desk yoga break will help you feel better after you finish work too because you will have more energy to do the things you love.

What Can You Expect From A Desk Yoga Session?

All desk yoga videos on the Balance Brain Body app are less than 15 minutes, many 5 or 10 minutes long, and all you need is yourself, sometimes your office chair (or sofa) and a bit of space around you.

Depending on your free time and your mood, there is something for you. You can boost your energy with movement and brain drills, or get in the zen zone with meditation and breathing techniques
